Free Things To Do With Kids in Leeds

Looking for some free activities for you and your kids around Leeds?

Here are some free days out I’ve found that won’t cost you a penny (Food & Travel being the exception of course).

February Half Term is almost upon us and even though it’s going to be a cold one, (free) days out still need to be planned.

Being a mother of five, Days out with the kids can seriously damage the bank balance. Doesn’t it seem like the kids have forever off with school holidays throughout the year and then weekends too!

Finding days to entertain them all at once hasn’t been an easy or cheap task. Especially with their different personalities and interests.

We moved back to Leeds in 2014 after my 3rd Child was born and after a few months of settling back over in the West of Yorkshire I wanted to get the kids out and about in Leeds.

We went to a few places that I’d been to growing up to find that quite a lot are now charging for admission. Although at the time I was only paying for one adult and one child. The first park was £9.30, the second £14.50 this isn’t really a lot for a day out, but it’s a shock to the system when it has been FREE for 25 years of your life! haha.

We did go in and have fun but the only thing is, these places were not worth the money!

They hadn’t changed from when I was younger and our day lasted a couple of hours before we were back out of there and heading home again, not exactly what I’d call a day out!

Over the past couple of years, with the children getting bigger, and the days out cost increasing each time one of them hits five-year old, I’ve managed to find a few favourites of ours that we have all enjoyed a good couple of times over the years.

Here are some of our favourite free places in Leeds:

1. Roundhay Park

Squirrel Eating

Roundhay Park is one of our favourites all year round, it covers a 700-acre nature park. We like to take a picnic, scooters, bikes and a football here because there is plenty of space for them all to just be wild.

We like to have a walk around the big lake and head up to the castle ruins that overlook the lake, the views are lovely!

You can have a walk through the wooded gorge where the kids like to try spot the squirrels, birds and other wildlife in the area.

At the bottom end of the park there is a Lakeside Café, and this is where you will find the ice-cream van too to keep you cool on those hot days! There’s also a couple of adventure playgrounds the kids love too.

All sorts of events are on here throughout the year too. Check the website when planning a trip, Ed Sheeran is making an appearance in August!

2. Royal Armouries museum

Autumn Leaves

This is one of the best free things to do in Leeds for the kids and adults too. It has five floors of displays from hunting to self-defence and oriental galleries, a war and a tournament gallery.

They also do themed weeks so be sure to check out there “what’s on” before you plan your visits, it is certainly worth coming back to again and again.

For this years February Half Term they are hosting “War Games” activities from Wed 13th – Sun 24th Feb. Check out the PROGRAMME for the week.

We will be visiting in April too for the Medieval Easter activities and the International Jousting Horse Show.

Whenever we are visiting Royal Armouries we usually have a walk around the Leeds Docks, Leeds City Centre is only 10-15 minutes walk too, or they offer a free water-taxi depending on the weather.

3. Leeds City Museum

Tiger's Face

Although we haven’t been here in a couple of years, this is definitely on the favourites list of free things to do in Leeds!

Leeds City Museum is situated in the City Centre, in Millennium Square. There are always different things going on throughout the year.

The kids love it at Christmas when the Traditional German Markets arrives with all the cosy looking wooden chalets, all the beautiful lights and the kids love to ride the Carousel…

but anyhow, Christmas is a long way away so we’ll get back on track!

The part the kids and I like most in the museum (activity days exempt) is the “Life on Earth Gallery”. It is filled with displays of animals, butterflies, also has interactive screens and even a craft area for the kids to do some colouring.

I’m looking forward to Michael Morpurgo: A Lifetime in stories coming to the Leeds City Museum from this weekend 8th February right up until 16th June!

Here’s a little about it :

Michael Morpurgo is one of Britain’s best-loved story makers. This unique exhibition showcases, for the first time, the notebooks and manuscripts that have become the classics we know today, including:

War Horse is a film I love but I’m yet to read the book, it is on my TBR list of course!

There is going to be an original handwritten draft of War Horse, along with props from the stage show and film. I will definitely be looking forward to giving that a visit.

The best thing about these places is that they offer so many different variations of events. The fact that most of these events are free for families makes it that more budget friendly.

Have you visited any of these place in Leeds?

If you have let me know what you enjoyed about them in the comments. If not, would these be places that interest you?

Until next time,

Sunday Sit Down Series #2

Welcome to week two of the Sunday Sit Down Series as Sundays are a more chilled out part of my week I wanted to start a Series where I can reflect on the past week.

If you haven’t read week one of the series then go check it out and find out what I’ll be talking about and discussing throughout the series.

Let’s get started!

Health, wellbeing and fitness

This week I’ve been walking, woohoo! I’ve only managed two days of over 10,000 steps but again this is a massive improvement, as I’m a huge fan of driving everywhere – I used to live literally around the corner from the kid’s school and still drove them – yes it probably took me more time getting them into the car than it would have to walk them around!

I’m still keeping up with my Vitamins and Minerals and yes I still see a massive improvement in my mood and even though my sleep is still all over the place, I’m not as tired as I have been throughout the day. It’s fantastic!

Still to work on are, My eating habits, these are still a bit of a mess so I need to start setting some alarms I think to tell me when to eat for a while. Sleep, I’m getting roughly 5-6 hours of disturbed sleep a night (or morning if you count the fact I don’t get to bed until gone midnight).

Social Media

This week I’ve not seen much of Social Media for the last part of the week, I mean I’ve been on but not had the chance to catch up with much. I’ve got involved in a couple of Twitter chats since my last Sunday Sit Down, which I found rather fun and loved the interaction.

I’ve not caught up with everyone’s blogs that I wanted to read and I’ve also not been able to do much self-promotion as I haven’t quite figured out Buffer yet, it seems to work on the laptop but won’t schedule anything from my phone, and as I’ve been mainly “phone bound” this week it’s been a pain in the arse, to say the least!

Blog

My Blog I’m a little bit gutted that I haven’t managed to get done what I wanted with my content this week, I’ve literally just not had the time or energy. My aim is to get three posts out a week as a minimum, I have my brain dumps done, I have partly completed drafts but I haven’t had much internet to carry on playing around with those.

Goal Review

Taking my own photos, that would be a no. I’ve taken photo’s this week but for my blog… NO! As before, I’ve literally had no time for blog life this week.

My budget didn’t last long haha! It’s all for a good reason though so I’m not pissed at myself for this at all. I’ll tell you further down as to why I’m not as gutted as I maybe should be about screwing up all my goals this week.

I am excited about some courses I’ve got lined up though, I’ve signed up for some courses that will help me out with my blogging experience, these should help me with Social Media, Productivity, Blog-Life balance etc and it’s probably good to do these now while I’m fairly new to my blog to help me and you get a better experience from my blog.

My Week Overall

This week has been Fantastic, you may be looking at this now thinking – How exactly has it been fantastic when you’ve got nothing done, your behind on your goals and basically been a hermit online all week – Well, I’ll tell you!

I signed for my house and got the keys this week and that is the most fantastic thing to have come out of this week or this year possibly. If you know a bit about me then you’ll know that I (and my five kids) have spent since the end of January living with “The Mother”, some may be wondering why I hyphenated and add italics to that and I will tell you all about it in another post in the future, for now, I don’t have time to go into it. sorry!

As for my onwards journey, things may still be a little slow for the time being with all my online activities as I will be working on the house and getting moved in hopefully by the end of next week. I hope you can all bear with me and I apologise now if I don’t manage to get round to all comments and replies etc over the next week or two, I don’t ignore you, I will catch up with everything as soon as I can.

I am so overly excited to get the house sorted so that I can finally get all my stuff out of storage and the kids can get all their clothes, toys etc back and get back to being their happy little selves! It’s been no fun, we’ve lived out of bags (only clothes & all Winter one’s at that) for the past three months, it’s going to be like Christmas opening all our boxes and seeing all the things we’ve forgotten about over the past months (the kids Christmas prezzies all got packed up pretty much as they opened them, so yea will definitely be Christmas again for them)! haha.

I’d just like to take this time to Thank Everyone who has stuck with me through the crappiness over the past few months and I promise I’ll be giving a lot more interaction as the months’ progress and upping my content as soon as I can, which is a lot closer now!

Until Next Time.

Much Love

Where I’ve been, what I’ve been Upto and where I’m going from here!

Hey all,

It’s great to be back, did you miss me? Aww, you probably didn’t even notice I’d gone anywhere! Haha.

cat-3015338_1920

Where I’ve been & what I’ve been Upto

The past few months have been pretty hellish to say the least, homeless, home-schooling, living with the mother, and to top it off, the company I was working with went into Administration! So yea, the past few months have been more on the down than upside.

The good news is, were all getting back on track… woohoo!

I managed to finally get my boy into a decent school and he’s settled in really well (and im glad, because home-schooling was horrendous). He loves that they go swimming every week as the school he’s at have their own pool… wish I’d of had a swimming pool in my primary school. 😕

I managed to bag my first school of choice (I should add I didn’t put any other choices…oops!) for my daughter, she will start in her reception class in September and I’m really excited and a bit apprehensive about this!

My younger two daughters are only 11 months apart in age and are pretty much like twins, they are in the same class at nursery and they do everything together, don’t get me wrong they also fight like cat and dog but they are still best buddies at the end of the day!

Maybe I’m just being daft but I worry that my youngest daughter won’t be happy without her there.

The most exciting news for me in this post is… We have a house *Yeyha* – well almost anyways, it’s getting fixed up – but I will finally have all my belongings back, won’t have to live out of bags anymore (with the 2/3 sets of clothes I have here) or sleep on floors and sofas and will have our own bloody space again!

I’m soooo looking forward to getting out of here it’s unreal, seriously!

There was me thinking a few days we’d be here but no… THREE freaking months, so far!

THE worst 3 months of our lives (ok that’s a slight exaggeration as you’ve probably never met my ex haha) but at this moment in time it’s what it feels like.

Me and the kids are really looking forward to the move and getting everything how we want it, it really is exciting times!

Where I’m going from here

As my plans, goals and life pretty much have been on hold for the past few months I’ve decided NOW is the right time to get the ball rolling!

I’ve wasted time being miserable, feeling sorry for myself and just generally put myself in a funk for all my time here – obviously I blame other people and my situation because that’s what normal people do – we don’t like to take the responsibility of it all, or is that just me?

woman-1006100_19201742527608.jpg

Anyhow, I’m happy to be back on the blog and glad to be back with you lovely people, ive missed you! 😘

My intentions firstly will be to get back to my goals I set myself at the beginning of the year – except with a different time scale for those obviously.

I’ve had a few companies contact me for collaborations while I’ve been gone and it really got me, with my lack of content and my disappearing act, that people still wanted to work with me and this made me really happy and I’ve just wanted to get back on it. I’ve left opportunities hanging, missed out on people & companies to work with and all because I had my head up my arse (and my computer in storage)!

I’ve still had people viewing my blog, commenting on my posts etc and it all gives me the motivation to get back to business, so thank you to everyone who kept up with me (even when there wasn’t anything to keep up with) it means the world to me.

I’ve tried to keep up with Social Media and fellow bloggers post but to be honest, my heart just hasn’t been in it so i’ve not left the comments i’ve wanted to or interacted with people as I should have either. Sorry!

From now on though, I solemnly swear not to leave my blog hanging and leave all my lovely followers with nothing to follow! 😀

But for now, I will have to love you and leave you, I have a teething 10 month old and a weeks worth of sleep to catch up on!

Until next time,

Much Love

My Reading Challenge 2018

I’ve been looking for a challenge or two to do for 2018 since the beginning of December (because five kids, starting up a blog, packing and moving isn’t enough of a challenge for me in January alone) haha!

I first found the goodreads challenge which you basically set yourself a goal of how many books you will read in the year, so I’ve set myself a target of 30 books.

It wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, I wanted something different!

Since 2016 when I started up my Online business, I’ve been working more on myself so my reads have been more on the personal development side and that is basically all I’ve been reading – it’s obviously not a bad thing to do, working on yourself, but you just know when you need something more…

I’ve missed the fantasy and thrillers, the Fairytale and true stories, the chance to be lost in another world – you know the ones – and the enticement of the book world is just too great to ignore for very long.

I found it!

I found exactly what I need to get me back into the world of books :-

The Popsugar Challenge!!

Not only is this going to grow my reading experience again, but I will be experiencing books I would never normally read, such as sports and feminism – if it’s the new age feminism stuff then, yuck!

I’m in love with the idea of the challenge and I’ve made a start with my reading challenge and my first book of choice is: The Colour of Magic written by Terry Pratchett, I love his books and I found 3 of his while packing the house up, all brand new I’d bought a couple of years back that I never got round to, so it was the perfect book to begin with.

The fact it falls under three of the categories helped – although I’ll not be cheating myself out of the challenge by marking one book as three – no point in doing it that way really is there?!

If you want to join me and many others in the Popsugar reading Challenge, here’s the list you’ll be needing for 2018

Have you joined in any challenges for 2018? Or even set your own? Let me know in the comments, I’m always looking for new things to get involved in.

Much Love

Laura xx
